He created the title roles in Keith Waterhouse's stage play Billy Liar 1960 and John Osborne's Luther 1961, and was associate artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre 1972-75. Later roles for the National Theatre include Tamburlaine in Marlowe's tragedy 1976 and Macbeth 1978. His films include Saturday Night and Sunday Morning 1960, Tom Jones 1963, Murder on the Orient Express 1974, and The Dresser 1984.
